A hard disk is a non-volatile storage device that stores digital information in the form of magnetic patterns on rapidly rotating disks.
It is also known as a hard drive, HDD (Hard Disk Drive), or storage drive. The disk inside a hard drive is made of aluminum or glass, and it is coated with a magnetic material.
The hard disk is connected to the computer’s motherboard via a cable, and it communicates with the computer’s processor through an interface.
The interface can be SATA, IDE, SCSI, or SAS, depending on the computer’s configuration.
There are two main types of hard disks: HDD and SSD (Solid-State Drive).
HDD: The traditional hard disk drive uses a spinning disk to store data. The disk spins at a high speed, and a read/write head is used to access the data stored on the disk.
HDD’s are cost-effective and have a larger storage capacity, but they are slower in comparison to SSDs.
SSD: A solid-state drive uses flash memory to store data.
Flash memory is a type of non-volatile storage that retains data even when the power is turned off (ex: pen drive). SSDs are faster than HDDs, but they are more expensive and have a smaller storage capacity.
The capacity of a hard disk is measured in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB). A standard hard disk can have a storage capacity of anywhere between 500 GB and 4 TB.
The speed of a hard disk is measured in RPM (Revolutions Per Minute). A standard hard disk spins at a speed of 5400 or 7200 RPM. SSDs, on the other hand, do not have a spinning disk, so their speed is measured in terms of read/write speeds.
A computer hard disk plays a vital role in the overall performance of a computer system.
